Gerco UK’s association with Intercontinental Hotel Group’s first Scottish based Hotel Indigo
The transformation of a 19th century Italian Palazzo – style building, once Glasgow’s first electric lighting generation station, into a contemporary boutique hotel has given Gerco UK, ICA Architects and Main Contractor, Bowmer and Kirkland, major challenges and plaudits in completing this unique project.
Gerco UK were responsible for all the walling and ceilings in the 96 bedroom Indigo Hotel, which contract extended over a period of some 6 months. The project threw up many challenges associated with converting an historic building into the splendid hotel which it has become.
Many aspects of the work required innovative approaches because of the refurbishment nature of the project, with, for example, space restrictions and finishing standards around the bathroom “pod” concept of construction calling for bespoke solutions. The achievement of good acoustic standards, important within an hotel, was given special attention during construction of accommodation.
The ground floor fit, in integrating and working around original building features, such as the ceiling in the bar and restaurant area, is particularly satisfying when the end result is observed.
Another challenging project brought to a successful conclusion, with quality of finish a key feature.
